Do You Have an Evil Editor Lurking in Your Brain
You finally did it… You’ve got a whole verse and chorus on the page. You are proud you sit back and let out that long sigh!
you reread what you wrote pick up your favorite blue writing pen and start scratching out and rewriting over words and lines, thinking to yourself I can do better then this. These words don’t really make sense, is this what I really want to say?If this sounds familiar you need to learn to silence your inside editor, seriously, you are your own worst writing nightmare. I’ve been there, done that!
How Do You Stop Doing This?
Let’s talk about it.
First realize everyone has done it or still does it. But you, you have just moved forward by seeing what you are doing to your writing. This issue with writers is not easy to stop, but you will in time.
When you have your next writing session, put a time limit on it like 15 minutes, then put your paper away or close the laptop and walk away. Seriously!
Do this a couple times when you are writing. Get yourself trained to come back and reread your lyric for a rewrite, not an edit!
Other Ways to Fight the Edit Demon
Sit down and just write what comes off the top of your head, don’t look up just keep writing what’s in your mind and let it flow through your pen to the paper. Don’t read it, put it away for later.
Come back and look for hooks in the writing or groupings of lines that go together. Don’t rewrite or change anything.
Another way to try and let go of the editing is to dim the lights, put a large piece of paper on the floor and just write all over it, different angles, no controlling thoughts, just writing. When you take away some of the extra stimuli around you like the lighting, you help yourself relax and write. Later look at what you wrote. Circle a few of those titles or groupings of sentences.
Go back later and write around the title or sentences that you like. You can try writing it with one of the above ideas.
Learn how to silence your editor with constructive ideas. You have all the time in the world to write a great song or a hit song!
